Politically Active

Hey Tom...thanks for commenting. It's amazing how much more motivated one can be to blog when you know people are reading it.

So, I did make good on my "contact your representative" idea. I contacted my state legislator about paid maternity leave. She wrote me a nice letter in return about their work. Later, I got another letter from the speaker of the house about the legislation as well. Wow! And all I did was click a few buttons on my computer to send a prewritten letter.

Since I got a response from my government when I spoke up about what I want it makes me want to say more. Why are we only asking for $170/week for 12 weeks of maternity leave? Why not a year at 50% of your income?

Speak up.

That's cool that your government actually responded to you! Almost makes paying taxes worthwhile!

How about getting a chance to split maternity and paternity? Give parents 'x' number of weeks, and let them split it up however they like. (well - give the mom a set # of weeks to start with - you know, because women are always complaining about how much more difficult giving birth is for the woman than the man. Like they can ever really know just how hard it is for us men...) :) (Emily says my sarcasm is going to get me in trouble one of these days. She also says I'll get in trouble for talking about things I know nothing about, such as maternity/paternity. Why does she always have to be right??)

My goal is to work for fisher-price when I get pregnant... =)

"When a Fisher-Pricer celebrates the birth or adoption of a child, the company joins in with a basket of toys for the new arrival and paid time-off for the new mom or dad. This is one important way we demonstrate commitment to our employees and belief in the importance of a supportive environment for every child, right from the start."
