Like Father, like Son
When we were in New Jersey to celebrate birthdays Grandma found Russ's old cowboy hat. Evan LOVED it! He wore all night and even rode the rocking horse for good measure. Such a cute little cowpoke!

Russ took some really cute pictures of Evan for a collage he and Evan put together for Grandma for her birthday present. The project turned out really good. He might be the next Zoolander....
Halloween (a tad late)
Evan picked out his costume with Russ at Walmart. The day before his Halloween party at preschool we tried to get him to try it on and he refused. He acted like we were asking him to put on a garment made of living bees instead of a buzz lightyear costume. We were a bit worried that things would go equally bad the next day for the party but... the next day the stars must have been aligned differently because he put the costume on without a second thought and had a great time at his school party.
Russ and I also donned costumes this year. We were quite the pair as "Death" (aka the grimm reaper) and Raggedy Ann.
Jumping in Leaves
Fall has been a fun season with Evan. This photo is of him after Russ raked in our back yard. He's putting a couple twigs to his head to pretend he's an alien. But we also had a lot of fun with an even bigger pile of leaves at Grandma and Poppy's house. Check it out.

Holding hands at preschool
Evan goes to an idyllic little preschool across town called "Sprout". The school is in a renovated 1/2 of a house that one of the teachers live in with her family. The backyard is just beautiful with apple trees and a very large, natural sandbox.
He seems to be enjoying preschool and will tell us all about what he did each day. We were not surprised that the "Book nook" became his favorite part of the classroom. We are also not too suprised that he does not like "Circle time" and, in fact, revels in telling us about how he "Didn't do circle time today." Little does he know that his teacher and I are in cahoots...she told me that he gets closer and closer to the circle everyday and is starting to show interest in what they are doing.

Ithaca is gorges
Ithaca really is gorges...and gorgeous. I was feeling rather grateful for the lovely spot we call home so I took a bunch of photos down at our creek towards the end of the summer so I could share them with you all. Just a few (maybe 3) blocks from our house there is an old boat launch that makes it very easy to wade into the creek and explore. Evan is a big fan of this activity and Russ likes to oblige him in the fun. Aren't they cute?
First Dirt
So we've been trying to be good little Ithacans and have a compost heap in our backyard, even though we live downtown and have very little "garden" area. I've been worried for awhile that we weren't getting the mix quite right and have been procrastinating the job of turning the heap and trying to get it right. Well...I finally got up some courage, took the big cover off the heap and dug in. I was so pleased to find that our garbage had turned back into EARTH! I got several buckets like this one out of the heap, and restarted the pile. We had stopped adding kitchen scraps for most of the summer but I think we are good to go again.

No joy
So...my friends and family are telling me they can't see the videos when the blog emails them. Hmmm.
I added myself to the email list and also didn't get the video. I tried changing a setting or two but I think this is just the limitation of the email notification feature.
Ok...so the best I can do is say that when it emails me there is a link to the blog at the bottom of the email that looks like this:

Blueberries
Yesterday, Evan and I took a little trip to Grisamore Farms. It was a lot of fun! We said hello to the animals, looked around the little country shop (and I resisted the yarn!)and eventually got out the the blueberries to start picking.
The picking was easy and I managed to pick more than 7 pounds all by myself. Evan was with me but I don't think he put a single berry in the bucket...they all went into his mouth! The berries were huge and SO yummy.

New Favorite Game
As I'm sure my readers are aware...Evan LOVES books. He would let me read to him all day every day if I had the patience to do it. :) He "reads" to himself for long stretches and makes piles of books so he knows which have been read and which are still waiting to be read.
Lately, he's been really into the words. Asking "How do you spell...?" and "What does that say?" etc. So it's no surprise that this is his new favorite game. Another variation is for him to make a long line of blocks and then ask me what it says.
How exactly do you pronounce "TGNRAPQZMMNOAD"?
Please note that we only have one D in our block set so we were using the lower case P as a d. So, it looks like pDA sometimes etc.
I love that he thinks this is so funny. Sorry for the jiggly camera work...I was laughing too.

Lazy Summer
It's been a nice lazy summer. We've been flying airplanes, knitting, reading, playing. We haven't traveled too much and have enjoyed staying home doing this and that.
Last night Evan and I went to the flying field with Russ and his Dad. During one flight Poppy crashed a bit and lost his landing gear. He and Russ wandered around in the tall grass for several minutes looking with no luck. Then another guy flying there went out to join them. Still no luck. Since no one was flying at that point I figured it was safe for Evan and I to go out and lend our eyeballs to the cause. As I set Evan down in the tall grass I made a snide comment about how he would probably be the one to find the wheels on a wire. The "other guy" said..."He should, he's closest to the ground." We all chuckled. Not two minutes later we look up from our searching to see little Evan standing there proud as punch holding the landing gear. It was the sweetest, cutest thing. He was so proud of himself. And I was proud of him too.
Today we built a zoo.
He was REALLY excited about this...it was pretty fun. And we used every block we had. :)

Another Life
I was going through our 700+ photos from our five weeks in France. (in 2005....BC) I wanted to find some photos that I could print 8x10s of and frame for this vast expanse of empty wall in our bedroom.
As I wandered through the photos and all the memories of our time there I was just flat out amazed at all the amazing things we did and saw. Holy crap!
Unfortunately, most of our photos are too small to make anything bigger than a 4x6 so I'm not sure what to do about my empty wall and my desire to relive the memories from that time.
This is a photo of some very tiny cable cars in the French Alps. There were 2 lines of them so we took this photo from our own little cable car. Like I said...amazing!

Time to Myself
I am really starting to miss Russ and Evan a lot. I can't wait for them to get home this afternoon and give them big hugs. Despite worrying about them I've enjoyed the rest and freedom of this couple days of solitude. I feel like I've had a nice mix of relaxing and industry...and it seems like so much of both compared to my normal life. :)
Here's what I've been up to...Moms and Dads out there will be jealous of this list. Others may just scratch their heads as to why these things are worth bragging about.
1) Turn on music. I like and turn it up so loud that I wouldn't hear anything a toddler might be doing.
2) Unhurriedly wash and put away the greens from our CSA--unhurriedly!
3) Spend several hours in a row working on a project outside during which I made 4 trips out in the car whenever it felt convenient without telling anyone or taking anyone with me. These hours resulted in a nice new path and a new sitting area on our front stoop.
4) Then I sat in said sitting area and called a friend. I talked to that friend for a good long time while doing NOTHING! No folding laundry, no doing dishes, no interruptions. I needed a rest from all that yard work, after all. :)
5) I ate both my lunch and dinner outside by myself and have yet to need to run the dishwasher or wash a dish.
6) I took a bath without having to ask permission of my husband a la "Could you watch Evan so I could take a bath?" and all the imposition and guilt that a question like this brings (at least a little bit)
7) I left for my knitting class without having to say goodbye to anyone or feel like maybe I shouldn't go after all. And class was lovely as usual.
8) Watched a girly movie while knitting until midnight because I knew I wouldn't have to be on duty the next day.
And this is just Thursday!!!!

Gratitude
I am part of a lovely little online group through my favorite website, Ravelry, which has a thread called "gratitude". Folks just post there whenever they are feeling grateful for things in their life. It seems to be the tradition of this thread to make a list of 4 or 5 things and start each with "I'm grateful for...". So...here goes:
I'm grateful for beautiful summer weather in Ithaca.
I'm grateful for some uninterrupted alone time at home...although I do miss my boys.
I'm grateful for a lovely yard around our house that is getting lovelier every day.

Vacation
Hello blog fans...We are on vacation in the Outerbanks and having a splendid time. The weather has been perfect...sunny but not too sunny, hot but not too hot. Evan is having lots of fun in the sand and pool but is still pretty much terrified of the ocean...which is just fine by me for now. Unfortunately we have yet to take a single photo. :( I'll try to get a bunch tomorrow so stay tuned.
However...last weekend we went back to Rochester to hang out with the newlyweds one last time before their trek across the country. While we were there we took on the Museum of Play with our newly potty trained(ing) toddler. It was a challenge but very fun. I highly recommend it and we'll no doubt return since we enjoyed only a fraction of all there was to do.
The huge section devoted to the Berenstein bears was a huge hit since we've been reading lots of their books as of late.
The Butterfly Museum was fun too. Well worth the extra couple bucks.

Babybook Fodder
Sometimes I'll tell my Mom or a friend stories about Evan and they'll say..."Ah, that's one for the babybook." Well...not so good about keeping up his baby book. So here are some memories we want to keep of Evan.
He likes to list his "favorites". He'll randomly announce "I like the front door, banana chips, the black car and Mama best." Too bad for the back door, the tan car, Dad and whatever the opposite of banana chips is.
Also babybook fodder is that he recently said he wanted a puppy. So..let the record show that he started asking for pets when he was 3 years old from his decidedly unpet-loving parents. Anybody want to place bets as to how long he'll have to wear us down before we give in?
We think he's going to be really good at those annoying SAT questions that give you one analogy and ask you to complete a second. Last night when I was tucking him in he told said "I'm a carrot, Dada is a rutabaga and you're a lettuce." Sometimes he picks different trucks for each of us, or characters from Cars or whatever.

Buzz Lightyear and other memories
About a month ago Evan was thoroughly obsessed with Toy Story (1 & 2). He was sick a bunch and so watched a lot more TV than usual...mostly these. I'm not too surprised that he started "pushing a button" on his chest and throwing his arms out into wings a la Buzz Lightyear. He does this upon meeting someone and tells them promptly "I can fly." He loves for us to swoop him up and fly him around...into the house, upstairs to bed, into the bathroom to use the potty. Flying is the way to go. The bucket his legos came in is his space helmet of choice (which means there is often a pile of legos on the floor). He also likes to act out scenes from the movie with us. He'll say "I can fly" to us and if we don't say "Can't" fairly promptly he gets angry. Like, come on Mom, learn your lines!!! He also does the "Who's the real Buzz?" scene from TS2. I'll have to try to get a video. Anyways, it's all pretty darn cute.

2 bucks worth of fun
So we tend to try our best to buy a limited number of things at Walmart. There is just so much cheap stuff there calling our names it is very hard to resist it all. Usually we manage to control ourselves but the other day I just could not resist getting Evan a Pixar Cars themed flashlight with character lenses...for about 2 bucks.
This provided and continues to provide long stretches of entertainment. It is especially fun in the bathroom with the lights off...convenient given our current adventures in potty training.
Potty Training - Part 2
Since it might be hard for me to take interesting photos of the potty training process to make blog posts about training more fun, I've added a potty training tracker to the right sidebar of the blog. You can track Evan's progress there if you're really interested.
When I got home from work yesterday Russ reported 4 real successes and that he had cleaned up ZERO puddles!!! GO RUSS!!! GO EVAN!!! That's huge, right? It's so hard to know if things are going well since every kid is different and we've never done this before. However, I think we should be super happy that Evan is wearing underwear (many pairs of underwear) all day (except to sleep), asking to sit on the potty, sitting on the potty for long stretches, going on the potty some of the time and generally having a good attitude about this BIG change in his little life.

Completely Gorgeous

Potty Training - Part 1 (of probably 27,432...ugh)
Well, today was the start (like, for real, this time) of our potty training journey. We threw Evan a Teddy Bear's Picnic themed Potty Party
after reading a book called How to Potty Train your Child in Just one Day. Hmmm...The idea of the party is to make the transition from diapers into underwear as fun and fight/stress free as possible. You spend the morning putting a doll into underpants, teaching it how to go on the potty, showing the doll that accidents happen and how to deal with them etc. We took the doll's one diaper over to a neighbor's house that has a baby and gave it to them. After saying goodbye to his diaper the doll gets to have a party and get gifts. Then in the afternoon it's the kid's turn. Evan wore underpants (many, many pairs of underpants) from Noon until bedtime with no tantrums or fights...but plenty of accidents and lots of time spent reading books and singing songs on the potty and we did have TWO real successes!! We said goodbye to 2 grocery bags full of diapers around 4:30 and left them on the neighbors porch.
We're not sure really if we should feel defeated or triumphant. We'll see how tomorrow goes, I guess.

Catch up
Very shortly after Evan turned 3 (actually about 3 minutes after his birthday party) my Dad gave Russ a model airplane.
It was a stealth transfer of RC spoils and I did not become privy to the new acquisition until the next day! (I guess I am fairly hostile to incoming RC vehicles...we have many in the house) Anyways, after a short get-to-know-you period, I've warmed up to the idea of a model airplane flying hubby and have actually enjoyed accompanying him on his flights. Evan and I go along to the big field near the playground and climb rocks

or blow bubbles while Russ flies his plane around. Sometimes we go for ice cream after. It's a nice family activity that I remember from my own childhood. Ah...good times.

Well...I guess the new laptop has not contributed to my blogging efforts very much. Mostly I surf through Ravelry, Facebook and my friends' blogs. Hi Karen, Hi Charla, Hi Amanda!!!! You guys rock!
(The title of this post is a play on the name of website Russ likes to visit called Fail Blog...check it out)
It's my knitting...blame it on the knitting. Oh, and I guess the last few months have been a bit busy preparing for my baby sister's wedding! Yes...wedding! She's married. It was a beautiful day from start to finish and she was beautiful and glowing with happiness. :) It has been a lot of fun to share in all the activity and to have reason to go to Rochester about every other weekend for a few months. We'll miss her and her new husband, Andrew, bunches when they move to Arizona soon.
I'll be sure to put up pictures of the wedding as soon as I manage to wrangle them up from friends and family. Evan was an awesome ringbearer. Totally cute in his vest and tie, took a nap and then danced the night away with his mama. The boy can bust a move! I guess it's the thought of trying to figure out the whole picture thing too. It's very intimidating and keeps me from just blogging text...who wants just text?!? (Please comment that you like text, if you like text. :)
We just got home from Evan's friend Sophia's 3rd birthday party. We had a good time...what's not to like about yummy food and ice cream cake. Russ left early to go accompany the chorus and I rode home with a friend. My knitting is in his car. Really, it's the knitting.

Words
The boy loves words. We've known this for quite some time by his high demand to be read to for hours and hours each day. His attention span for stories is often longer than ours. One of his favorites lately has been the original Winnie-the-Pooh. He'll easily sit through three chapters and ask for more.
The new thing though is spelling words and recognizing words he knows how to spell. I hesitate to call it reading because he still only knows a handful of words. So far he can spell and recognize: Evan, Toy, Mom, and Dad.
We recently inherited another lot of toys and puzzles from our friends the Haefners (bless 'em) and a few of them are pre-reading activities that I've been shopping around for!!! Yippee!
And I just heard from a friend that it's already time to shop for a preschool! Yikes!

naptime
Evan has been getting a little harder to put to sleep, especially for Sarah. He's also recently begun to realize that he can get out of bed himself...
Today Sarah put him down for his nap and he promptly got out of bed and followed her out of the room. (Monty Python???)
Then he got back in bed only to immediately get out again and read books until he fell asleep on the floor. I came in an hour later to find him sleeping half in his closet.
Cute. One more day until I get a little break from incessant piano obligations.

CSA Food Adventures
We signed up for the Winter Share with our CSA and it has been an adventure figuring out just exactly how to eat pounds and pounds of root vegetables. Over the last 10 weeks or so we've made:
Veggie Latkes - like potato latkes only with carrots, parsnips, beets and salsify
Squash Soup - a plain kind with cream and Red Kuri with coconut milk
Raw Slaw - shredded raw beets, carrots, celeriac and salsify with vinaigrette, raisins, craisins and sunflower seeds
Basic Stew - so much basic stew
Borcht - Yup, beet soup. We dipped our grilled cheese in it.
Garlic Bean Dip
Basic roasted root vegetables several times...Russ had the idea to put in a whole head of garlic once. That was really good on toast. Mmm...good on toast.
Winter Root Veg Braise from Joy of Cooking a couple times but it's pretty complicated.
Brussels Sprouts-- dude, when was the last time YOU ate a brusels sprout???
Many kinds of cooked greens as a veggie/side or in spaghetti - collards, mustard greens, kale, beet greens
I even made Salsa Verde but used collard greens instead of parsley and it went great with the salmon Russ bought.
Yes this was a lot of time in the kitchen with a peeler and stained fingers but it is so yummy and I do enjoy cooking.

Winter Fun
Our good friends the Hearns moved to Texas (which we thought was crazy), and they think we're crazy for living in such a frozen tundra for a good part of the year. They came to visit over break and it snowed several inches while they were here. They got to play in the snow a good bit. We have had snow on the ground and temperatures well below freezing since they left on New Years Day. Crazy, yes. But it can be fun...
This is at our good friends Rob and Amanda's lovely plantation. They expanded the pond over the summer for this very purpose. More fun than we deserve.

Rhymin Simon
Evan has been rhyming everything lately. He'll make up words so they rhyme with words we have used. Like tonight I said "Do you want to call Grandma on the computer?" and he said "No, call grandma on the saputer." If I ask him "Would you like a cookie?" he'll reply "Yes, ba-bess". "Please, louise" is a norm now too. I have NO idea where this came from but he's definitely into it. Tonight he turned to me and said "Does anyone know what rhymes with polar bear?"
Gotta love it.

Evanisms
Evan is constantly saying things that make us chuckle. Unfortunately I do not have Charlene's memory so I don't remember a lot of them long enough to record them for posterity. So....before I forget here are a few that stuck:
In the car Russ was filling me in on the whole conflict in Israel lately. Evan asked something and Russ tried to explain...basically saying that one group of people wanted to kill another group of people. In true toddler form he said "That's not very nice."
He'll ask us several times a day, weekend or not..."So, how was your day off?"
When we're reading books...and we're always reading books... it generally goes like this:
Parent: Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton
Evan: Sandra Boynton wrote that book
and then we read the rest of the book.
With this new found access to the blog I hope to keep these coming. If I think of any others I'll be sure to put them up...and I'm sure there will be new ones each day.

A New Era
A new era has dawned in the Posegate household. I have my own laptop now. That's right, me, Sarah, the wife, the mom, now has full time access to all things computer related without having to utter the words "Do you need the computer?" or "Can I use the computer?" It seemed like an extravagence to me to have 2 laptops in the house. I guess the IBM thinkpad that doesn't work and the desktop that collects dust in our guest room also contributed to the feeling that we didn't need another computer but I couldn't ignore the frequent feeling that I "could be" doing this or that or the other thing on the computer if only it didn't mean tearing the "newspaper" from Russ's hands or keeping him from doing our finances and paying the bills, or uploading/labeling/editing/publishing our phots or any of the other things Russ manages to do for us on the laptop. Thanks hon'!!!!
I'm hoping that this new era will mean I can post to the blog more often, keep up on my friends blogs via my newly set up google reader, enjoy facebook and even maybe Skype (new laptop comes with webcam and microphone) but that seems like advanced technique to me. Since this modern life of ours, I often feel, robs us of the proximity to our friends and family that perhaps generations past enjoyed, I guess I should embrace the technology that promises to keep us close despite our physical distance.
Hope to see you out there in cyberspace all!!!
