The True Life of J.S. Bach (trans. from German by Hoyt Rogers) was really interesting, the author, Eidam, is 50% concerned with an accurate portrayal of Bach's life using all sources available and a common-sense rendering of the facts. The other 50% is dedicated to sarcastic jabs at other Bach biographers. He repeats and contradicts himself just enough to be annoying and I'm guessing that some of the wit didn't survive the translation process.

March by Geraldine Brooks is historical fiction set as a partner book to Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (which I read but barely remember). Very good, nice and short, and a pleasant compliment to the Shaara books I just finished.
